A SHORT REVIEW OF THE SLS/MLS RAILTOURS
The Hull and Barnsley Rail Tour.
This Rail Tour ran on Sunday the 24th August 1952 and
started from
Manchester Central, departing at 9.55am and called at
Chinley,
Sheffield (Midland), Cudworth and then ran via the Hull
& Barnsley
Railway to Paragon Station, Hull.
The return journey was the same as the outward except for
additional
stops at Didsbury, Withington and Chorlton stations to set
down.
A note in the programme stated that the train would not use
Cannon
Street station, the original terminus of the Hull &
Barnsley
Railway, due to the dangerous condition of the roof and
platform.
The same pamphlet also confirmed that the locomotives to be
used would
be no 40726, the last Midland Railway Class 3P 4-4-0 from
Manchester to
Cudworth and thence a North Eastern Railway Wilson Worsdell
"R" (D20)
4-4-0. The locomotive allocated on the day was no 62360.
Light refreshments were available on the trip and ladies
were very
welcome!
Five bogie coaches made up the stock of the train,
consisting of:
B.T.O., T.O., T.O., T.O., B.T.O. The maximum load would be
155 tons.

The tour train is seen at
Manchester Central before departure. The locomotive is no
40726, the
last ex M.R. Class 3P remaining in service. Its home depot
was Canklow.

Chinley Station on the outward journey. Because of an
early arrival
here the tour passengers had ample time to observe the
proceedings.

At Sheffield Midland. The
train
called here for ten minutes in both directions.

Another view of 40726 at
Sheffield Midland on the outward leg.

The locomotives were
changed at
Cudworth and here the SLS/MLS tour headboard is being
removed from the
front of the ex-Midland engine.
The following list is compiled from the B.R Special Notice
for railway
staff which had the actual times hand written on it by a
tour passenger.
